Ondo assembly summons ministry of environment officials, stakeholders

The Ondo State House of Assembly has invited officials of the Ministry of Environment and other allied agencies to appear before it tomorrow, just as the state government commiserated with families of the flood victims.

The lawmakers summon the officials while making reference to the flooding in Akungba which claimed the life of a-400 level student of the Adekunle Ajasin University.

While empathising with the parents of the drowned student, they blamed the incident on obstruction of drainages and the waterways with debris and other materials.

The house called on people of the state to stop dropping refuse in waterways and erecting  buildings in water channels to prevent flooding.

Reference was equally made to other disasters caused by flooding in other parts of the state especially when an aged woman caught in the web of the flood and later died because of the complications.

The lawmakers called on relevant agencies to rise to the challenges of saving lives and property whenever such disasters occur.

The Speaker, Honourable Bamidele Oleyelogun, commiserated with the parents of the drowned student, and raised a team of lawmakers to visit the parents of the student,  as well as the university community to express the house’s sympathy and condolences on the sad incident.

The Speaker equally called on residents to stop building houses on waterways while dumping of refuse in drainages should stop henceforth.

Meanwhile, students of the institution have been leaving in large numbers from their places of abode in the area. Some of the students were seen packaging out of their rented apartments.

Many of the students were disturbed that flooding which drowned the final year student, Doyin Boluwaji, could reoccur and therefore did not want to take chances.
