One killed in Akwa Ibom communal clash, Police confirm

The Akwa Ibom Police Command has confirmed the killing of one person in the communical clash that ensued between Yoruba residents and indigenes of Ibeno in the Ibeno local government area.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Odicko MacDon, told Blueprint in Uyo on Thursday, that some others (although he did not mention the exact number) sustained injuries.

“I can confirm the killing of one person and injuries to some persons.

“As we speak, the situation is under control because the State Commissioner of Police had given oder for the Tactical Team to move in and restore peace.

“As it stands, there is peace there now and we are also engaging stakeholders to see how e can sustain it,” MacDon added.

But it was further gathered from a source from the community that property worth millions of naira have been destroyed in the process from both sides.

Although, the actual cause of the fracas was yet to be established, the source said the crisis started as a result of cult clash before it turn out an ethnic dimension.

However, a concerned citizen and Yoruba indigenes living in the state, Oluwajuwon Ogunbiyi, who also confirmed the incident, described the situation as unfortunate and called on the state government to set up a committee to investigate the crisis.
