Onitsha fire: Foundation urges Obiano to create ministry of emergency

Godwin Ezeemo Voter Education Foundation, (GEVE), a non profit organisation has advocated for creation of state ministry of emergency for quick response to urgent issues.
The call became necessary following the recent fire outbreak at some parts of Onitsha due to tanker which led to loss of lives and properties.

Executive Director of GEVE, Barr. Jezie Ekejiuba, in a petition addressed to Governor Willie Obiano and Rt Hon. Uche Okafor, Speaker of Anambra state House of Assembly, said creating Ministry of Emergency Affairs would help to quickly manage and respond to emergency disasters like petrol tanker accidents, fire outbreaks, flood control, erosion control, among others.

“Our state government should take a cue from President Muhammadu Buhari who recently created the same type of ministry at the Federal level to cater for the emergency disasters caused by the Boko Haram insurgency.

“We also appeal to you Sir, to use your good office to revoke the Certificate of Occupancy granted by your government to a private company which as a result converted the publicly owned premises of the Onitsha Zonal Headquarters of Anambra State Fire Service Station along Obodoukwu Road to a private Motor Park.
“The overriding importance of public Fire Service over private Motor Park cannot be over-emphasized. We commiserate with the Government and the good people of Anambra State especially the affected victims and their families on the two recent unfortunate petrol tanker fire accidents at Onitsha,” said.
