Onitsha inferno: Anambra govt inspect damages, promises to compensate victims

The Anambra state Commissioner for Commerce, Markets and Wealth Creation, Hon Uchenna Okafor, has assured victims of the Ochanja fire disaster of compensation from the state government.

Okafor, who gave the assurance when he inspected the extent of damage done by
the inferno, assured that the government would identify with the victims irrespective of the organisation they belong.

“A panel to investigate cause of  the inferno led by the Deputy governor, Dr Nkem Okeke, is expected to complete its work within three weeks. Inventory on the losses is currently going on as the heads of markets and plazas affected are assisting the committee on disaster to compile names of the victims,” he revealed.

Earlier, Chief Chinedu Okonkwo, who spoke on behalf of the Emordi Shoe Dealers Association, one of the affected plazas, regretted that they were yet to receive assistant from National Assembly and state House of Assembly members from the area since the incident occurred.

He said posters of those who died in the inferno have been installed at the Emordi shoe Dealers market.
