Only 30% of Yobe teachers are qualified-Don

Former Vice Chancellor University of Maiduguri and Chairman Yobe State Technical Committee for revitalization of basic and secondary education set-up by Governor Mai Mala Buni to improve standard of education in the state, Prof. Mala M. Daura, said only 30 per cent of its teachers have the required teaching qualifications.

The University Don disclosed this Monday, at Government House Damaturu while submitting interim report of his committee.

“About 30 per cent of the teachers on ground have no teaching qualification.  The general outlook of enrolment is about 60 per cent of eligible students and a high proportion of about 40 per cent are out of school”.

“The teaching and learning environment in urban setting and local government headquarters are overstretched, while rural areas have poor enrolment and retention” he said

Daura further, said his “committee had visited 1,430 school across the state, saying most of the schools were over overstretched with students ranging from 180 and above per classroom as against the normal standard of 40-50”.

He said other challenges were lack of furniture, toilets, and laboratories, among others.

Responding, Governor Mai Mala Buni, thanked the committee for the speedy work and assured that the recommendations made would be implemented soonest within the available resources at his disposal.

He called on the Secretary to the State Government, ministry of education and other relevant agencies to make sure they work hand-in-hand to see that the education sector receives solid, vibrant and robust quality.
