A Kano based Islamic Scholar Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar said the wanton killings currently being perpetrated in Zamfara state by armed bandits could only be stopped through the declaration of state of emergency by the federal government.
Delivering his weekly sermon at the Al-furqan Jumuat mosque in Kano on Friday, Umar said the people of Zamfara state deserve pity and all forms of compassion from Nigerians.
He said the time had come for federal government to match its words with action on how to end the disturbing spate of criminal banditry in the area.
He said: “You can’t say you are ruling people with their living condition becoming abysmal. We are talking of good governance in a democratic setting, while we have allowed insecurity to take a disastrous toll on our lives. The issue must be holistically revisited; paying lip service is not a solution.
“I can’t imagine the way and manner the northern part of the country should be the only region to be permeated by insecurity. The federal government should be proactive in finding a lasting solution to the problem.
