Onuobia wins inaugural SprinNG Women Authors prize

The 2020 SprinNG Women Authors Prize has been awarded to Cheluchi Onyemelukwe-Onuobia for her debut novel, “The Son of the House.”
The award, an initiative of literary organization SprinNG, invests up to N200 thousand in purchasing, distributing, and marketing of a winning book.

She was announced winner from a shortlist that included Azizah Idris M’s “A Sackful of Wishes” and Olaoluwa Oni’s “The YNBA.”

“The Son of the House” won the Best International Fiction Book Award category at the 2019 Sharjah International Book Fair. Last year, PenguinBooksSA announced a UK and Italian edition forthcoming from Europa Editions.

Born in 1978 in Nigeria, Onuobia is a lawyer and academic who has done much advocacy work on issues such as violence against women and girls, and health. She holds a doctorate in law from Dalhousie University in Canada and often advises international organisations. An earlier draft of “The Son of the House” was longlisted in Mslexia’s novel writing competition. She currently lives in Lagos.
