Open defaecation: Katsina govt plans 40 public toilets

Worried about the increase in open defaecation, the Katsina state government has resolved to construct 40 public toilets within the metropolitan area.

The executive director, state environmental and protection agency (SEPA), Yunusa Charanchi, at a press briefing yesterday said open defaecation was responsible for increase in cases of diseases in the state.
Charanchi explained that government had already cleared site and released fund for the take off of the toilets, this year.

He said the public toilets would be constructed at motor parks and other public places, adding that about eight public toilets were constructed last year to minimise problem of open defaecation.

He appealed to people in the state to always use public toilets anytime the need arose and should not engage in open defaecation.
On street hawking, Yunusa said government had employed and trained 30 youths to minimise congestion and clear street hawkers within the metropolitan area.

He lamented that illegal street hawking had caused unnecessary congestion and created dirty environment, saying that part of the move to ensure clean maintenance of environment, a recycling of waste was introduced by the government.
He said the new measure had provided farmers with organic fertilisers and generated over N1 million into government coffers from the sale of recycling waste.
