Open letter to Minister of Education

I wonder if government really takes out their time to go round schools and get first-hand knowledge of how some private schools are maltreating their teachers. Government should do something to make teachers in private schools smile and not only those of public schools. As a teacher at Christ Apostolic Church, Nursery and Primary School, Makurdi, I was promoted to a class assistant based on my excellent performances. This is besides the annual salary increment for all staff as well as staff training as da deliberate policy of the school.

In contrast, however, there are schools where teachers’ salaries are constant for up to five years. This is deplorable and should be regulated by government. In some private schools, students pay exorbitant fees which enable such schools to pay living wages enhance teachers’ welfare.
The best way to ensure the commitment of teachers in both private and public schools is for government to formulate policies that will promote the welfare of teachers.  This will also help to check the brain-drain in the teaching profession.
