Orthopaedic graduate launches book on diabetes

An Orthopaedic cast technician at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Bida, Niger state, Mr. Nasiru Alhaji Shaba, has unveiled a book he authored on diabetes titled, “Diabetic Foot Care: A Basic Foot Care Guide for Persons Living with Diabetes and Their Care Givers.”

The book was launched last Saturday in an event organised by management of the FMC as part of marking this year’s ‘World Diabetes Day (WDD). 

Chairman of the occasion and  Chief Medical Director of FMC, Dr Muhammad Aminu Usman, commended Shaba for writing on diabetes, which he described as a “life-threatening disease”.

He said four out of five people with diabetes live in poor countries or households.

“In 2019, 463 million adults were living with diabetes across the globe. And it had claimed 4.3 million lives. Equally, by 2023, over 578 million people are expected to be diabetic judging from the present rate of its widespread,” Dr. Usman said. 

On his part, the young author said the book was written for diabetic patients and their care givers, “especially now that diabetes is becoming a major challenge for societies worldwide, and foot complications are one of the commonest complications associated with this disease. It is also a leading cause of non-traumatic limb amputation.”

Shaba, who is on the staff of Surgery Department Services at the Bida medical centre, also commiserated with families across the world, who lost their loved ones to diabetes, urging Nigerians to be wary of the symptoms of the killer disease.

A popular Nupe historian and seasoned female journalist, Dr. Ndagi Abdullahi and Hajiya Maimuna Muhammad Kolo, presented the book in Nupe language to guests.
