Osibanjo commissions 2.8MW solar hybrid power in Ebonyi

The vice-president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Friday commissioned a 2.8 megawatts decentralised solar hybrid project capable of supplying power to over 7,700 students and 1,819 staff of Alex Ekwueme Federal University of Nigeria, Ndufu Alike Ikwo AE-FUNAI in Ebonyi state.

He also commissioned workshop/training centre to promote renewable energy training as well as the 7.5KM of street lighting to enhance security and safety within FUNAI campus.

Osinbajo at the ceremonies said the electrification project would provide sustainable decentralised energy to the entire campus, improve education and create a better university experience for both students and staff.

He said, “We are all here today to witness the Buhari administration fulfilling another Next Level roadmap agenda. This project will provide sustainable decentralized energy to the entire campus, improve education and create a better university experience for both students and staff. Gone are the days where students read at night with candles, lanterns and torches. Our young people are willing to learn and they have great aspirations. It is our duty to aid them to accomplish their goals by providing a conducive learning environment for them. I am glad to be a part of this great feat as we commission this 2.8 MW decentralised solar hybrid power plant that will supply 7,700 students and 1,819 staff of Alex Ekwueme  2.8 MW decentralised solar hybrid power University, Ndufu Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), with clean, reliable and affordable electric power.

“As additional components of this remarkable project, we are also commissioning a renewables workshop/training center to promote renewable energy training and installed over 7.5KM of street lighting to enhance security and safety within FUNAI campus. Our students will not only reap the benefits of clean, reliable and affordable electricity, they will also receive hands-on training on renewable energy which can be applied beyond the walls of this university.”

Governor David Umahi, in his speech, expressed joy and appealed for partnership to extend the solar power to the College of Education and 104 communities in Ikwo local government area.

“I will like to partner with the federal government to expand this project so that Ikwo College of Education can also benefit as well as the local government headquarters. We offer this partnership, Your Excellency, and we believe it is possible. We are planning to bring solar power to 140 communities of Ebonyi state,” he said.
