Osimhen beats George Weah’s record, set to clinch another feat

Few days after Napoli won the Serie A title in 33 years, prolific striker, Victor Osimhen, has now beaten former Liberian international and AC Milan striker George Weah record.

How Osimhen Made It Happen

Specifically, the energetic forward who hails from Nigeria surpassed Weah to become the highest goal scoring African in the Italian Serie A

This is after he scored the only goal in his side’s 1-0 win over Fiorentina at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Sunday May 7, 2023.

Osimhen scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the 74th minute.

The rare moment presented an opportunity for the Nigerian football star to redeem himself after he failed to convert an earlier penalty in the 48th minute of the game.

It was also his first ever goal from the spot at club level and 47 overall at the Italian top league level.

The previous record of 46 goals was held by the current Liberian President, Weah, who represented Milan between 1995 and 2000, winning the World Footballer of The Year award within the period.

The Difference

For Osimhen, his feat came in just three seasons, while that of Weah happened within a period of five seasons.

In the past few days, the Nigerian also surpassed former Cameroon and Inter Milan striker, Samuel Eto’o, as the African player with the most goals in a single Serie A campaign.

Eto’o had scored 21 goals for Inter in the 2009/10 season when they won the treble.

Another Feat Beckons For Osimhen

Osimhen this season has taken his tally to 23 goals in 28 league games.

He has found the back of the net 28 times in 35 appearances across all competitions.

With the season gradually winding down, Osimhen could become the first African in Serie A history to win the top scorer of the season award.

Ofcourse, he is already topping the top scorer’s chart ahead of Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez with 19 goals.
