Osun river overflows, wrecks havoc in Osogbo

Properties worth millions of naira were on Sunday destroyed while many residents were displayed as Osun river overflow it’s boundary following a two days rainfall in Osogbo and it’s environs.


The heavy rainfall started on Thursday and it continued till Saturday night. Many homes were deserted while some workshop closed to the river were washed away.


The flood wrecked havoc in some areas like Gbodofon community, Awosuru area, Baruwa Estate, Zone 10&11 and Ibu-Amo community areas in Osogbo, among others.


The village head of Ibu-Amo community was displaced from his house, while schools and shops were destroyed by the flood.


Residents recalled that such occurrence had occurred last in 2010. It was gathered that the river had been blocked by refuse in some areas, thus causing overflow.


It was gathered that some of the victims have left their homes when they noticed the flood some days ago while many were trapped-in on Saturday night.


Those that woke up to discover that the water has entered, struggled to go out, while the flood destroyed their properties.
A residence in one of the areas visited by our correspondent who pleaded anonymity, said one of the victims just completed the building and packed in early this year.


He said residence in the area warned the man that flood usually enter where he built his house, but he refused to listen.
