Osun: Villagers, hunters engage kidnappers in gun duel, foil attempt


Some suspected herdsmen were Monday faced with hunters in Koka village, Ibokun, Osun state, during an attempt to kidnap some inhabitants of the village. 


The herdsmen suspected to be kidnappers, were said to have entered the village around 12midnight, and attempted to kidnap some members of the village. 


It was gathered that some villagers and hunters have been preparing to prevent any criminals from entering the village. 


Immediately, they entered the village, the villagers and hunters faced them and engaged them in gun battle for some minutes. 


The spokesperson of the state police command, SP Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the incident to news men in Osogbo, on Monday. 


According to the police spokesperson, three villagers sustained bullet wounds during the encounter. 


Opalola explained that the attempt kidnapping was foiled by the villagers and their hunters who were in apparent readiness for the kidnappers. 


She stated that the villagers eventually succeeded in sending the suspected kidnappers away but three villagers sustained gun wounds. 


Opalola said the police has drafted officers to join the local, cordons and search operation, noting that efforts are ongoing to ensure arrest of the fleeing culprits. 


The police spokesperson stated that the wounded victims have been taken to the hospital for treatment.
