Outages: Despite gas challenges, we’ve generated 650MW—NDPHC

The Executive Director in charge of generation for the National Integrated Power Plants
(NIPP) at the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Engr. Abdullahi Kassim,
has disclosed that despite gas challenges confronting the NIPP,  the company has
generated 650MW to the national grid.

Kassim, who spoke in a statement issued by the media office of the Minister of Power, Engr.
Sale Mamman in Abuja, said: “We have as at today close to 2000 MW available and ready
to generate to the grid but seriously limited by gas supply to the power stations”.
The Minister of Power, Engr. Sale Mamman, last week apologized to Nigerians over
blackout across the country.

However, Kassim said: “Reference to the press release by the Honorable Minister of Power on
the situation of power in Nigeria and pointing to the issue relating to NIPP plants. I want to make
some clarification on the true situation of the National Integrated Power Plants.
“Although some of our units are undergoing OEM recommended maintenance, we have as at
today close to 2000 MW available and ready to generate to the grid but seriously limited by gas
supply to the power stations. We could only get gas to generate 650MW.

“As at today 17th April, 2020 NIPP plants at Geregu (130MW), Alaoji (210MW) and Calabar
(310MW) are currently generating electricity to the grid providing a total output of about
650MW.

“However, our power plants along the ELPS as follows: Ogorode (Sapele) – 360MW
Ihovbor (Benin) – 240MW
Omotosho – 120MW
Olorunsogo – 120MW
Geregu – 290MW
The above Naotional Intergrated Power Plants are to supply power to the national grid but all are
constrained by lack of gas supply on the  ELPS.

“We understand from NGC that the main reason for the shortage of gas is due to maintenance
work on most of their gas suppliers (CNL, NPDC, PanOcean) and other key suppliers on the
ELPS.  Even with some of our units on OEM recommended maintenance, but still we have about
2000MW mechanically available and ready to generate to the grid.
“We also understand that many other generation companies that are not part of the National
Intergrated Power Plants namely;  Afam, Omoku are similarly challenged by lack of gas supply
for their operations.

“We are in touch with our gas supplies and NGC who are willing and ready to supply gas as soon
as the gas transportation challenge is resolved. We have also been working with our regulator,
NERC and TCN to resolve the current challenge of low generation in the country”.
