Over 119 women die daily in Nigeria from complication of pregnancies

The wife of Kaduna State Governor, Hajiya Fatima Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, has said that averagely 119 women die every day in Nigeria from complications of pregnancy, labour or child birth and also about 241 newborn babies die annually in Nigeria and neonatal mortality rate is 40 per 1,000 live birth.

Speaking at the one day Town Hall Meeting on Maternal and Child health organised Advocacy Nigeria and Sure-P Kaduna said that it is more disturbed as many women deliver at home and ignore the trained health care provider.

She explained that “the major concern of Sure-P is to reduce maternal mortality and child morbidity, even though government strategies cannot do it all alone, there is need to work closely with all stakeholders like Advocacy Nigeria to achieve goal 5 of the MDGs,” she said.
According to her, the United Nations describes maternal mortality as death of a woman while pregnant irrespective of the duration and the size of the pregnancy.

In his contribution, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Paul Dogo, called on rural women to patronise the health facilities in the state to save the lives of children who are the future generation.

He said that there would be a programme from the LGAs of visit the rural pregnant women called Door to Door activities aimed to bring down death rate.

In her goodwill message, the Director of Hope for Village Child, Sister Rita Schwerzenberger, called for the training of traditional birth attendants (BTAs) since the rural women believed more in them for delivery in community based.
