No fewer than 90 women in Birnin Kebbi local government area of Kebbi state have been empowered by Oxfam in collaboration with its development partners, European Union, through PROACT, to avail them productive assets that would guarantee sustainable income flow.

Speaking at the flag-off distribution of economic assets to the beneficiaries at the Birnin Kebbi local government secretariat over the weekend, Executive Director of Development Exchange Centre Kebbi state office, Mr. Illiya Gidado Sambo, said the aim was to improve on the living standard of women, especially those in puddah.

He explained that the three organisations have been the leading force in women empowerment and promotion of gender justice through income generation activities to enable them create their own business enterprises.

He said the items distributed included tailoring, grinding, sewing and spaghetti-making machines among other items distributed as soft loan facilities at subsidised rates.

Sambo further noted that the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 flood disaster impacted negatively on many households, adding that “since the beginning of the pandemic women are more likely to have lost their jobs, business and livelihoods than men because of their unsecured employments.”

The state Oxfam coordinator, Mr Faleye Usman, reminded the beneficiaries to make the very best use of the facilities given to them, explaining that their minds should be focused on repayment of the soft loan as it is a revolving facility.

According to him, the organisation would monitor the beneficiaries on how they utilise the facilities periodically as well serve as advisory on them with a view to improving sustainable income flow.

Falaye applauded the efforts of the state government for their technical and moral support to the organisations on the way forward.
