Oyo assembly commences orientation for members- elect

The Oyo State House of Assembly (OYHA) Monday commenced a three-day orientation programme for its 9th Assembly members- elect.

The Speaker, Mr Olagunju Ojo, urged the new members to make the best of the opportunity by surpassing the expectations of their various constituencies.

Addressing the members-elect at the orientation programme in Ibadan, Ojo said the maxim “to whom much is given, much is expected “is apposite in their cases, as representatives of their constituencies.

“This training is very crucial and strategic toward making inauguration of the 9th assembly very impactful.

“Your constituents believed in your abilities and charisma to deliver, hence they supported you and this gave you victories at the polls.

“The task ahead is enormous; with determination to learn and with God on your side, your tenure will be impactful,” he said.

The speaker said that the constitution is the working document of any legislature, noting that its observance and amendment are the responsibilities of the legislature.

“The confirmation of appointment of the chief judge of the state, cabinet members and other public officers, and their removal from office, are duties of the legislature.

“This is the more reason a legislator is to equip himself/herself with necessary training on legislative processes in order to be able to cope with the intricacies and applications of various provisions of our statute books,” he said.

Ojo urged them to resolve conflicts when they arise.

“I need to let you know that from the onset, that as conflict is inevitable in every human relationship, always expect to manage and resolve conflicts between yourselves.

“I want you all to always have focus of having one house in an atmosphere of peace throughout your tenure.

“The house must always be determined to set positive pace for others, therefore only healthy rivalry should be promoted.

“Members should endeavour to downplay differences and maintain a right focus, providing quality representation and good governance of our people,” he said.

The orientation programme will tomorrow. (NAN)
