Participants brainstorm on sickle cell detection

Members of Sickle Cell Support Society of Nigeria (SCSSN) in conjunction with Silver Lake Research Corporation, Asuza, California, have brainstormed on Haemo TypeSC, a novel point of care test for the detection of sickle cell disease.
Presenting a lecture entitled Newborn Screening, the Vice-chairman of Sickle Cell Support Society of Nigeria (SCSSN), Prof. Obiageli Nnodu, told the participants that the society had train health workers in some medical centres with a view to empowering them to have a requisite knowledge of detecting sickle cell disorder.
Nnodu, who doubles as a Director Centre for Sickle Cell Research and Training (CESTRA), said that the society would continue to provide infrastructure in the health centres in order to reduce the burden of sickle cell disease in the communities.
The Professor of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, College of Health Sciences, University of Abuja, threw more light on the national guidelines for the control and management of sickle cell disease as well as the procedure to implement the new born screening.
Nnodu noted that the society would continue to stage sickle cell advocacy campaign with a view to educating the members of the public just as she commended the world Health Organisation (WHO) for working closely with the society.
She disclosed that not less than 700 and 500 both adults and newborns, respectively, had been screened through Hemo TypeSC aimed at reducing the burden of sickle cell disease in the country.
