Pastor emerges Unizik new VC 2 months after having a quadruplet

The immediate past Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Professor Charles Okechukwu Esimone, has emerged as the 6th Vice Chancellor (VC) of the institution.

Esimone, a Deeper life pastor whose wife was delivered of quadruplet, two boys and two girls, on March 2019, was announced as NAU substantive VC at the conclusion of interviews for the exalted position in which he took the first position.

He is currently director of Confucius Institute of the University, a Fellow of Academy of Science (FAS), and pioneer dean of the faculty of pharmaceutical sciences of NAU.

The university’s Director of Information & Public Relations/Chief Protocol Officer, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, who disclosed this in a statement issued Tuesday night, said he was immediately handed his appointment letter as the sixth substantive Vice Chancellor of the university by the governing council of the institution.

According to Ojukwu, the Pro-Chancellor and the Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Azeez Oladotun, said Esimone’s emergence as the new Vice Chancellor was done through a rigorous and transparent selection process. 

About 10 professors had indicated interest for the vice chancellorship seat of the prestigious university.

The professor of Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Microbiology, who hails from Akwaeze in Anaocha LGA of Anambra State, would next month, take over the mantle of Vice Chancellorship from the outgoing vice Chancellor of the university, the man he deputized as VC Academics, Prof. Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku. 

Ahaneku, who is from Mbaise in Imo state, took over from Prof. Boniface Egboka in June, 2014.

The university had in a statement advertised the VC post published by the Secretary to the Council and Acting Registrar in early January and stated that the candidate for the post must, inter alia, “be highly distinguished and self-motivated academic of the rank of Professor of not less ten (10) years experience on that rank in a reputable university. He/she must not be more than 65 years of age at the time of assumption of office, should be able to serve the full term of five years before attaining the retirement age of 70 years and must be physically and mentally fit.”
