‘PCNI working to check cholera outbreak in North-east’

Presidential Committee on North East Initiative (PCNI) has stated that it was working assiduously to curtain the spread of cholera outbreak in the Internally Displaced Persons camp across the North-east with the Oral Cholera vaccination (OCV).
Th is is even as it also revealed that the committee was considering alternative source of energy supply in the war-torn zone.
Presenting his report on the North-east by the head of humanitarian assistance, resettlement and rehabilitation, Dr Sidi Ali, at the October coordination Forum, yesterday in Abuja, he said PCNI “is working through the health sector working group in Borno to curtail the spread of the cholera outbreak.
” According to him, the second round of the Oral Cholera Vaccination campaign will soon commence.
He also revealed that PCNI had met with FHI360 regarding alternative sources of energy supply in the region, saying discussions on this are ongoing and next steps have been determined.
He said: “PCNI, in partnership with a pharmaceutical company carried out a de-worming exercise in Gombe state.
Further to this, a meeting was held with the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) and PCNI was informed that they have over 12m doses of Albendazole in the Lagos store.
So, they require support for logistics to take the drugs to the states.
PCNI is providing donated drugs and medical equipment to Adamawa state.
” Continuing, he said: “PCNI will coordinate and monitor the distribution of these items to ensure the items gets to the beneficiaries.
Items being donated by partners will be monitored by PCNI using relevant partners and agencies.
” Declaring the meeting open, the Vice chairman, Alhaji Tijjani Tumsah, who represented General Th eophilus Danjuma, the chairman, called for the inclusion of the Northeast rehabilitation project in the 2018 budget.
He said the meeting was to ensure that all eff orts toward the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the region are properly harnessed.
“The PCNI is working on designing a programme that specifically outlines the workability of enlisting retired teachers and new education graduates into the NE PCNI will work with UNICEF to rebuild the temporary learning spaces.
The PCNI is working with partners to repair destroyed schools across the states,” he said.
He also stated that in its efforts to ensure the safe return and resettlement of returnees to their communities, the PCNI in collaboration with the security agencies had developed a framework for modalities to declaring a community safe for return.
