PDP, APC disagree on peace accord in Enugu

The two mainstream political parties in Enugu state, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and All Progressive Congress (APC), have disagreed on signing of peace accord to ensure credible 2019 elections in the state.

To the leadership of the ruling party, PDP, the peace accord is capable of ensuring peaceful election, while APC th views the peace accord as mere formality that may not translate to reality.

The chairman of APC, Dr. Ben Nwoye, speaking with journalists shortly after sensitization meeting on election security and signing of peace accord organized by the state Police Command in Enugu yesterday said the signing of the peace accord  is a yearly ritual which does not hold any substance in ensuring free and fair election.

He said :“The signing of the peace accord is just a ceremony organized  by security agencies every year to show that they are on ground .

He debunked the insinuation that Enugu state is peaceful saying: “Crime has been on the rise in Enugu state. As chairman of APC, I was attacked while a security man attached to me was wounded  and up till

today, no  arrest has been made by the police.

“The peace accord is a routine service as you can see that before we could read the content, the opposition were happy to sign it without knowing the content. In fact it’s a mockery of the process,” he lamented.

On his part, the chairman of People’s Democratic Party (PDP),

Augustine Nnamani expressed optimism that the signing of the peace accord will go a long way to ensure free and fair election in the state.

“In PDP, we believe that for any family to run well and for election to be free, fair and credible, there must be peace in the land. So, that is  the importance of this exercise. So we cherish it so much,” he said.

Speaking at the event, the state Commisioner of Police, Dan Mallam Mohammed warned politicians against involving themselves in any act capable of causing violence during 2019 general election.

According to him, both local and international observers are watching to see if 2019 election will be peaceful in Nigeria, hence the need for political parties to play by the rule of the law.

The police boss vowed that anybody caught fomenting trouble would be dealt with according to the law.  He called on politicians to guide their supporters and educate them on electoral law.
