PDP rejects Zamfara LG council election

Zamfara state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described last Saturday’s local government polls in the state as a kangaroo election.

According to the state chairman of the party, Alhaji Ibrahim Mallaha, the election was not supposed to be conducted when the case was still in court.

He held that both the All Progressives Congress-led government and the state Independent Electoral Commission have gone contrary to the provisions of the constitution of Nigeria and the Electoral Act.

Reacting to the conduct of the election, Mallaha explained that the election was loosely organised by both the state government and the state independent electoral commission, SIEC.

“We cannot imagine how only one party could conduct election even when the whole people working in the state electoral commission are on the state government’s payroll,” he stressed.

Mallaha blamed the court for allowing the state government and the SIEC to conduct the election in the first place since the court has not decided on the case, stating that the court itself did not exercise its constitutional power.

He, however, called on the court to nullify the election and set another agenda for an official election into the leadership of the local government election in the state.

“If the judiciary is very sincere it must order for the cancellation of the so-called local government councils’ election in the state,” he added.

He assured that the PDP in its efforts to fight injustice in the state, would not relent, saying that irrespective of any political difference they are all Zamfara state citizens which he said that they must be treated equally in the face of the law and constitution provisions guiding the whole country.
