A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party and former governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has expressed confidence that his party would reclaim Lugard House in 2019 governorship polls in the state.
Speaking to newsmen at his residence in Lokoja over the weekend, Alhaji Idris pointed out that the PDP had learnt from its mistakes, which led to its defeat in the last governorship election.
He assured that rather than allow Godfathers to dictate the political direction of the state, the party would allow the people to decide freely who should direct their affairs at all levels.
He said this was part of the new rebuilding process in the opposition party and added that the era of impunity and imposition of candidates have gone for good, and emphasised that whoever desires to lead in the party must be prepared to test his or her popularity with the people.
According to him, the rebuilding process in the party in Kogi state was aimed at charting a new beginning, where every member would be given the opportunity to contribute his or her quota to the development of the state, describing the just concluded ward congress of the party across the state as a huge success.
“It is obvious that many prominent indigenes of the state have signified interest to contest the next governorship poll under the PDP, apparently the way they are moving at the moment, we are sure of sending the present government packing in the next dispensation” he said.
He pointed out that the PDP did its best while piloting the affairs of the state, in terms of human and infrastructural development, saying the electorates are in a position to compare and contrast, assuring
that Kogi under PDP would surely change for the better.
The PDP stalwart stressed that what the state needs now is a God fearing, articulate, humane, intelligent, vibrant and transparent governor who would mobilize his people for development, maintaining that his support for a candidate can not translate to automatic victory.
“It is only God Almighty that has the power to ordain a leader, and as such, it would be a costly mistake for anyone to attempt to play God, so whoever God chooses would have the mandate to lead the people in the next political dispensation in the state.
