Peace Corps nabs 3 teenagers for ‘attempted gang-rape’

Ilorin Peace Corps of Nigeria, Kwara state command, yesterday arrested three teenagers who were said to be students of a secondary school in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, for alleged attempted gang rape of 14-year-old girl (names withheld).
The state commandant of the Corps, Patriot Lukman Adelowo Yekini, who spoke with newsmen in Ilorin, said the suspects had been handed over to the police in lines with the rules of engagements of the Corps.
Speaking with newsmen on the incident, the Peace Corps commandant said the suspects were arrested while attempting to rape the victim who is a student of a junior secondary school in Ilorin.
He said the three suspects were also students of a secondary school in Ilorin.
Yekini said the suspects had succeeded in stripping the victim naked but the rape was averted due to intervention of an officer of the Corps who stumbled on the scene of the incident when they were trying to commit the act.
The commandant said two suspects ran away from the scene of the incident, but luck ran out on the third suspect because as he was arrested.
Yekini said third suspect that was arrested at the scene of the incident later assisted the Corps to apprehend the fleeing two suspects.
He said the suspects and the victim had been handed over to the police for further investigation in line with the rules and regulations of the Corps.
“We are very happy yesterday when our officers handed over the suspects to the police at ‘A’ Division because they really commended our efforts at ensuring that the rape was averted.
” The corps commandant commended the officer who prevented the rape, adding that one of core mandates of the Corps was to eradicate social vices like cultism, drug abuse, and truancy and examination malpractices among the students.
Yekini called on parents to monitor the activities of their children to prevent them from joining bad company for them to grow up as responsible citizens.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officers, Kwara state Command, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident, saying the police was still investigating the matter.
