Plant trees to access oxygen, expert advises Kano residents

A senior lecturer with the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Bayero University, Kano, Dr. Aliyu Salisu Barau Chedi, has called on the residents of Kano metropolitan area to imbibe the culture of tees planting for the sake of accessing oxygen in their respective areas of accommodation.

Speaking at the launch of City Innovation and Transformation of Youths Laboratory in parts of Kano metropolis yesterday, Chedi said planting trees was a formidable step in checking high risk ecological disasters “like desert encroachment and soil erosion,” adding that one was “at liberty to access adequate oxygen with planting trees within the area he is living.”

He said the issue of personal hygiene and robust health could only be feasible and adequately guaranteed with access to oxygen secured, pointing out that in areas where trees planting was given top priority the benefits to be derived were enormous.

Chedi, who spoke through a senior lecturer at the Department of Geography, BUK, Dr. Adnan Abdulhamid, however, stated that the programme was conceived and designed to focus attention in communities “bearing the names of some trees which were popular in Kano metropolitan area.”

He cited Rimin Gata, Dorayi and Kurna as the communities slated for the tree planting exercise.

Chedi, the coordinator of the project, further said the city urban biodiversity would increase as lost species of plants which would be reintroduced and “make some lost birds and insect come back as a result of that which is their habitat.”

The trees planted he stressed were provided with maximum protection in the communities and tracking system was developed to track the survival of those trees through the use of GPS and continuous contact with the communities.
