The President of Persons Living with Disability Initiative (PLWDI), Engr Augustine Onwuamaegbu, has raised the alarm over attack on members by bandits along Abuja-Kaduna road.
Onwuamaegbu said this while speaking with newsmen Saturday in Abuja.
He decried the inhuman treatment and outright lack of empathy on the plight of people living with disability by bandits who attacked them while on an empowerment mission to Katari village in Kaduna state.
He said, “PLWDI numbering about 25 were on a journey to the village in a coastal bus to help people living with disability in katari village when they ran into the bandits, numbering about eighth with AK 47 and were beaten mercilessly.”
He added that several dangerous weapons were unleashed on their members to disposes them of their valuables, adding that some of them sustained varying degrees of injuries.
According to him, the bandits made away with our wheelchairs, braille machine, rice, guide canes among others.
He condemned the attack on members for no just cause, stating that the bandits refused to take their condition into consideration while unleashing terror on them.
He said :”The group had on April 16 embarked on a journey to katari village in Kaduna state to distribute food items and other empowerment materials to their members when the bandits swooped on them while stopping to ease themselves on the road.
“The bandits came out of the bush and attacked them, wielding dangerous weapons, ordered the 25 of them to obey their instructions and were beaten to a pulp without recourse to their condition.”
He called for thorough investigation into this ill treatment, adding that fishing out the perpetrators of such dastard and heinous crime would assuage the feelings of members.
