Police arraign driver over alleged wilful damage of employer’s vehicle

A 42-year-old driver, Wakili Olunade, Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, over alleged maliciously damage of a company’s vehicle while doing personal business.

The defendant, who was charged with  breach of the peace and willful damage, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

According to the Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, the defendant committed the offences on February 15, 2019, in Ikeja.

He said  the defendant maliciously damaged a vehicle belonging to Demogramate Company, when he was sent to deliver goods in Owerri.

“After delivering the goods at its destination, he used the vehicle to do his own personal business  – to convey other goods to an unknown location.

“In the process of the illegal business, the vehicle was willfully damaged,” he alleged.

The prosecutor said that the case was reported to the police and the defendant arrested.

Ayorinde noted that the offences violated Sections 168 and 350 of the Criminal Law of Lagos state, 2015.

Section 350 provides for two years’ imprisonment for willful damage.

The Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties.

Osunsanmi said the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos state government.
