Police arraign student for ‘shielding armed robbery suspect’

The police yesterday arraigned a university student, Cynthia Asema, in a Kubwa Magistrate Court for shielding an armed robbery suspect.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Echedu Kelechi, told the court that Jimoh Otuozae, reported a case of armed robbery at the Duste Alhaji Police Station in Kubwa, on December 11, 2013.
He said the complainant, who resides at Dutse Sokale, reported that he was robbed at Panaf Pharmacy by Terihile-Jairus Asema persons who were armed with dangerous weapons.

Kelechi said the accused posed as the suspect’s wife and did not disclose his whereabouts.
She added that he knew about the suspect’s nefarious activities, but deliberately refused to expose him.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 83 (c) of the Panel Code.
Cynthia pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to her.

The Magistrate, Mrs Elizabeth Jonnes-Wanni, granted the accused bail in the sum of N150,000 with a surety in like sum.
Jonnes-Wanni said the surety must produce a copy of evidence of payment of a reliable utility bill and must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.
She also ordered that the surety must fill a bond with two passport photographs. She adjourned the case to February 24. (NAN)
