Police arraigns 3 bank officials for alleged N14m fraud

Osun state Police Command, Thursday, arraigned three officials of Otan Ayegbaju Microfinance bank before Justice Peter Lifu of a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun state, for alleged N14million fraud.

The defendants, Aderinlowo Joseph, Oyinlola Abimbola and Sotomi Abosede, were alleged to have conspired with some people, now at large, to commit the alleged crime.

They were arraigned on five count charges bothering on conspiracy, cyber crime and stealing.

The defendants, who were alleged to have accessed computer and altered it to defraud customers of Microfinance Bank, Otan Ayegbaju, were said to have committed the purported crime in December 2019.

The charge sheet read in the court stated that  the defendants were alleged to have stolen N14,273,770, property of Microfinance Bank, Otan Ayegbaju.

Counsels to the defendants, Chief Bola Abimbola-Ige and Mr I. O. Atofarati, prayed the court to grant their clients bail in the most liberal term, referring the court to section 36(5) of the Nigerian Constitution and section 158 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

The counsels submitted that their clients are still presumed to be innocent, and the offences, being a bailable one.

But, the prosecutor, Mr Francis Osei, opposed the bail of the defendants, saying they may jump bail, considering the gravity of the alleged offences.

However, Justice Lifu granted the defendants bail in the sum of N10million with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned to March 18, 2020 for hearing.
