Police arraigns tax collector for alleged fraud in Osun


Osun state Police Command, on Wednesday, arraigned a staff of Osun Internal Revenue Service (OIRS), Mr Dare Ogunrinde, for alleged N665,712 fraud. 


The defendant was arraigned on 2-count charges of stealing and breach of peace.


The Prosecutor, Mr. Abiodun Fagboyinbo, alleged that the defendant committed a crime contrary to section 353 and punishable under section 390(9) of Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol.11, law of Osun State, 2002.


According to the charge sheet, the defendant who is a level 10 officer with the agency received the said sum as a tax from a firm, Orbitwood and Allied Company, and refused to issue tax receipt of the amount paid to him. 


The prosecution alleged that the defendant conducted himself in a manner that could cause breach of peace, thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 249(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34, law of Osun State, 2002.


The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the allegations preferred against him. 


His counsel, Mr. Musa Abdullahi, urged the court to grant his client bail on a very liberal terms.


The Magistrate, Olusegun Ayilara, thereby granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with 2 sureties in like sum. 


One of the sureties, according to the Magistrate, must be a a civil servant of not less than level 10, and must be a house owner with evidence of such. 


Magistrate Ayilara adjourned the case to March 15 for hearing.
