Police arrest 5 over national ID ‘forgery’

Sokoto

Officers of the Sokoto State Police Command have arrested five persons for alleged abatement and forgery of the National Identity Card.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state, Cordelia Nwewe, while parading the suspects before journalists at the command headquarters in Sokoto, said two of the suspects are staff of a commercial bank while the others are business centre operators.
She said, “One Nasir Sifawa went to open an account with a commercial bank in Sokoto, where he met the Accounting Officer, Mudassiru Taofeeq, who enquired from him about the national identity card.
“In the process, the officer informed his colleague, Perez Percy, who in turn demanded N4,000, Sifawa’s details and his passport photograph to produce the ID.
“Eventually, a temporary slip of the national identity card was produced for Sifawa by the bank officer and was used to open the account.”
According to her, Sifawa, not knowing that the ID was a forgery took the slip to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) office in Bodinga Local Government with the aim of collecting the original ID.
She said an official at the NIMC office collected the slip and on discovering that it was a forgery alerted the NIMC head office in Sokoto.
“NIMC in turn informed the Police Command about the incident leading to the arrest of the suspects, who are cooperating with the police in their investigation,” the spokesperson said.
She said the suspects would be charged to court on completion of investigation.
