Police expose those responsible for Lagos Island violence

The Lagos state Police command Monday gave the reasons for the violence that erupted in Lagos Island in the early hours of Monday.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benjamin Hundeyin said the violence was caused by traders who reneged on an earlier agreement not to open shops on Sundays and Mondays.
Hundeyin, in response to a message shared by a Nigerian on his social media handle stated that some APC thugs are on rampage on the streets of Lagos because Peter Obi won Tinubu in Abibu Oki Street off Broadstreet in Mandilas market Lagos Island. He said they are chasing Igbos, robbing them and destroying their properties.”
Reacting swiftly to the tweet, Hundeyin saying it was fake news.
He added: “The market association agreed that shops would remain closed Sunday and Monday. But Igbo traders this morning decided to renege on the agreement and they open shops. Some hoodlums took it upon themselves to enforce compliance and the police were alerted.
“The police arrived promptly. The hoodlums fled upon sighting police patrol vans. Not one shop was vandalised. Not one person was robbed. Not one person was injured. Normalcy was swiftly returned, and officers remain on the ground.”
However, Hundeyin’s reaction has caused a mixed reaction, with some Nigerians accusing him of profiling a certain group of people.
He further stated that the command had been on top of every situation in the state and it is ready for peace, law and order to the extent that in the election, the command arrested over twenty political thugs in connection with cases of electoral violence and ballot box snatching recorded in parts of the state during Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

He said police responded to hundreds of distressed calls across the 13,325 polling units in Lagos and described the incidents at Okota, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Elegushi, and other areas of the state as “a clear case of political thuggery.”
