Police grill Edo PDP chair over IDPs ‘rice diversion’

 

The police in Edo yesterday grilled the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), state chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, over his allegation that the state government diverted rice meant for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Uhogua, Ovia North East Local Government area of the state.
According to sources, the PDP chairman was questioned for several hours by the State Investigation Baurea during wish he made statement.
Supporters of the PDP besieged the State Police Command over the incident, accusing the government of allegedly using state apparatus to intimidate the opposition.
He was picked up for questioning following a petition signed by Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Osarodion Ogie, who adduced, “this complaint is to formally bring these weighty and unsubstantiated allegations to your attention and to request a thorough investigation with a view to establishing the veracity or otherwise of same”.
Orbih had told reporters that the state government diverted over 4,000 bags of rice donated to the IDPs by the Nigeria Customs Service.
The PDP chairman, who spoke with journalists after the interrogation said: “From my statement, it has been well established that the government of Edo State misappropriated the rice meant for the IDPs.
According to him, in my opinion, these are very weighty allegations and my invitation was put forward by the government to incite members of the public against the PDP in Edo State.
However, he commended the Edo State Police Command for the mature and professional way they handled this issue.
