Police stops group from protesting at Edo Assembly

The Edo State Police command has barred the Joint Action for the Advancement of Democracy (JAADE) from a planned protest the inauguration of the State House of Assembly.

The operatives in a letter endorsed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Tunde Sumonu on behalf of the DCP Operations  advised the group to seek redress in court.

JAADE is a coalition of group across the state which includes Benin Youth Council (BYC), Esan Progress and Unity Forum (EPUF), Edo North Democratic Frontiers (ENDF) amongst others.

However, Convener of JAADE  Mr. Aiyamenkhue Edokpolo said the emergence of the 7th Assembly leadership is “minority rule” because only 9 out of 24 members were inaugurated.

Aiyamenkhue stated that the exercise fell short of democratic principles and expectations from Governor Godwin Obaseki and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to him, “we demand for the immediate and unconditional restoration to the ideal democratic order, where a proper inauguration for the 24 members-elect will be done freely and fairly.

“We believe that Edo is a congregate of some of the most enlightened Nigerians; and thus view the motor park-styled inauguration of the Assembly as a generational disgrace.”
