Police uncover baby factory in Delta

The police in Delta state have said that they had discovered a place in Oko, Oshimili South LGA of the state where pregnant women were nurtured before delivery for onward sales.
DSP Celestina Kalu, who conducted newsmen round the hut where the pregnant women were cramped into before delivery, said a suspected human trafficker, one Chinelo Ezeugo, and five pregnant women were arrested, while four children were rescued.
She gave the names of the rescued children as Ibrahim Usman, 5, Usman Mohammed, 2, Chidera Okechukwu, 5, and Abigail Ezeugo, 1.

According to her, the ‘B’ Division of the Police Command got information that Chinelo Ezeugo, believed to be in her forties, had recruited unknown pregnant women and delivered them of their babies for sales.
She Chinelo Ezeugo harboured “some children and some pregnant women whom is tracking. After nine months of conceiving and when they give birth, she will go on to sell the baby.”

Kalu lamented the spate at which baby factories were being discovered across the country, saying that “we have discovered one in Delta State today,” and solicited the cooperation of members of the public in the area of information volunteering.
She said: “You can imagine this kind of dilapidated place, who can suspect that such act would be happening here. So, people should be vigilant and observant and when they see things that are not right in the society, they should inform the police.”
According to her, the matter is investigated and that the suspects would be charged to court under the human trafficking law.
“It is a crime to give birth after nine months of pregnancy and sell. We will charge all the suspects including the merchant and the five pregnant women to court as soon as investigation is concluded.”
