— Sultan, others shower encomiums on Etsu Nupe
Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomole, has described the nation’s politicians as “shameless people who lean on royal fathers,” especially when there are crisis, adding that “presently, Nigeria needs traditional rulers more than before.”
Oshiomole stated this yesterday in Abuja at the public presentation and launch of a book in honour of Etsu Nupe, His Royal Higness, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, entitled “A custodian of our customary heritage.”
He said the present happenings in the country needed the attention of royal fathers like the Etsu Nupe more than before, adding that “we the politicians shamelessly lean on them when the crisis are over.”
Oshiomhole, who said the book was about Nigeria and not about Nupe Kingdom alone, thanked the royal father for his contribution as the chancellor of Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma.
Emir of Birnin/Gwari, who stood in for Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, described the honouree as “a peace coordinator” who had done much for his people.
Also, Niger state governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, who was represented by his deputy, described the day as “a fulfilling day.”
He said: “Today is therefore a fulfilling day not only for Bida Emirate Council or Nupe kingdom but also entire people and government of Niger state for the pride Etsu Nupe continue to bring to us by his outstanding achievements as a traditional leader of international repute.”
In his address, the Etsu appreciated the honour bestowed on him and called on the National Assembly to use the ongoing constitutional amendment exercise to consider and appropriate laws to cover the establishment of traditional institutions at the federal, state and local government level in the country.
