Poor teachers’ welfare causes rot in education – Akanbi

Th e former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mustapha Akanbi (retd), has attributed the decline in the standard of education in the country to poor welfare of teachers. Akanbi appealed to government at all levels to be sensitive to the plight of workers, affi rming that “adequate and standard remuneration begets eff ective service delivery”. He called on government to invest heavily on the country’s education by evolving policies and programmes that would protect the interest of teachers and workers in general so as to have a virile and well focused educational standard. Akanbi made the observation at the weekend in his speech at the fi rst end of the year party and prize giving ceremony of Nana Ahisat Academy, Akerebiata area off Sobi road Ilorin, Kwara state.

Th e pioneer chairman of ICPC further explained that a “well-promoted worker would naturally motivate and the good welfare package would give him or her ample time to focus his or her choosing careers”. Akanbi, who is the proprietor of Nana Aishat Academy, also appealed to the government to attach priority to all sectors of the economy so as to put the country education and other sectors on a good footing. He said adequate salary remuneration was “directly proportional to eff ective service delivery, pointed out that the earlier Nigeria leaders identify this, the better for the socioeconomic development of the country”. In his address, the chairman of the occasion, who is the Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, Dr. Kayode Adam, urged Nigerian students to choose the right path by striving to remain focus and not joining the gang of dropouts who would constitute themselves into nuisance for the public
