Post-UME breeding ground for corruption – Oloyede

Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof Ishaq Oloyede, said at the weekend that the ban on post- University Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) was a breeding ground for corruption during examination. Oloyede spoke on the heels of government lifting of ban on the conduct of post-UME by tertiary institutions in the country.

Th e JAMB boss was responding to questions from reporters shortly after the foundation laying ceremony of a 500-seater capacity mega Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun state. Governor Ibikunle Amosun performed the groundbreaking foundation laying of the centre built for JAMB by the National Universities Commission (NUC), in collaboration with Alake of Egba, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo and Senator Joseph Dada (Ogun West). Speaking at the event, Oloyede observed that the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, reversed the policy having realised that applicants were being extorted of their money.

“Th e development was a courageous step on the part of the minister”, Oloyede said. According to him, JAMB is just a clearing house and it will continue to ensure equity and fairness in the admission process, but it will not encroach on the rights of the institutions. “What happened last year was a disaster, it is only because it was properly managed by the minister otherwise we would have been in problem. “After the cancellation of post-UTME, many of you did not realise that institutions had to fall back on WAEC and they were grading candidates on the basis of scores in the subject. What happened which was a disaster was that we discovered that some people we exploiting the policy to create “very very high level of corruption.”
