Poverty alleviation: Abuja institute trains 30 women on cosmetology

As part of its corporate social responsibility, Kings and Queens Beauty Institute has trained 30 less privileged women selected from two communities in Abuja; Kuchigoro and Karonmajigi on cosmetology and beauty therapy.

According to the rector of the institute, Ms Susie Aghedo, the aim of the training is to ensure the girl child is empowered, according to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in order for them not to fall prey to social vices.

Addressing newsmen Thursday in Abuja during the award of certificate ceremony to the beneficiaries, Aghedo said that the training will be extended to other communities within Abuja next year, even as she implored the beneficiaries to implement what they learnt and possibly train others.

She said: “This programme is our contribution to society. It is aimed at achieving the SDGs for the girl child in particular because, if you train a girl, you have trained a nation. We choose to train women in order to empower them and take them out of the street. Out of the 30 women we trained, about 80 per cent of them have been out of school for more than three years and are jobless. So, we decided to start with this category of women first, so that they won’t fall prey to social vices.

“The two communities have close proximity, so we met with their leaders and tabled our conditions before they selected the beneficiaries. We will go to other communities next year. We gave scholarships to four of the girls to earn diploma certificates and we will monitor others to make sure they implement what they learnt. Some of them have already started making wigs to sell this Yuletide and that’s encouraging. I implore they should train others and request for our assistance whenever possible.”

“Also speaking, Registra of the school, Mr Toritse Ikomi, said the institution was recently approved by the National Board for Technical Education to offer courses that would lead to award of Diploma in Beauty and Cosmetology, adding that the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board has also approved the institution for students willing to study Beauty and Cosmetology courses for award of certificates.
