Power sector loses N2.1bn to insufficient gas supply

The Nigeria’s power sector on Sunday lost an estimated N2,145bn due to insufficient gas supply, distribution and transmission infrastructure, a report by the Advisory Power Team, office of the Vice President, has said.

The team in its energy daily report released on Monday in Abuja also said Electricity Generation Companies (GenCos), which comprised gas-fired and hydro station, were unable to generate 4,208 megawatts of electricity on the same day due to unavailability of gas.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had on Saturday, raised the alarm that the nation’s power sector was experiencing power supply shortage as a result of low gas supply.

According to TCN, the development is responsible for the power supply shortage being experienced in some major cities.

The company in a statement by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ms. Ndidi Mbah, said

Sapele NIPP, Olorunsogo NIPP, lIhovbor NIPP and Azura Edo power plants,generated zero Megawatts on Saturday.

The statement also stated that  Egbin (Steam), Sapele (Steam), Delta (gas), Geregu (gas). Omotosho(gas), Olorusogo (gas),

Geregu NIPP, Alaoji NIPP, Omotosho NIPP, Odukpani NIPP, Okpai (Gas/Steam) and Omoku (gas) power generating plants, which were also affected,  generated at lower capacities on the same day.

The Advisory Power Team in its report also noted that 260 megawatts of electricity were not generated due to unavailability of transmission infrastructure during the period.

Also, it said 0 megawatt was not generated due to high frequency resulting from unavailability of distribution infrastructure, adding that 0 megawatts was recorded as losses due to water management.

The report, however, said the GenCos released an average of 3,634 MegaWatts/Hour of electricity into the national grid on Sunday.
