Presidential committee spends N800m on instructional materials

Presidential Committee on North-east Initiative (PCNI), said it had spent N800 million on the purchase of instructional materials for distribution to primary and secondary schools in the troubled North-east.

Vice chairman of PCNI, Alhaji Tijani Tumsa, stated this while fielding questions from newsmen in Gombe Tuesday shortly after the Flag-off of the distribution of some of the instructional materials.

Tumsa said that 6,750 teachers and 67,500 students across the zone would benefit from the gesture.

He said the materials would impact positively on the education of children in the sub-region, which had the highest number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

Stakeholders in education sector in the affected states, he said, were expected to identify schools that would benefit from the materials.

Similarly he said that Civil Society Organisations would monitor and evaluate the impact of the intervention.

Receiving the items for Gombe state, commissioner for education, Alhaji Isiaku Abdullahi, said the measure was a welcome development that would impact positively on the education sector in the state.

Abdullahi said that Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo was committed to investing in the sector.

He commended PCNI for the intervention and assured that the items would be judiciously utilised.

The chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Professor Mohammed Gurama, said apart from instructional materials, SUBEB had benefited from PCNI in the area of teacher training.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the occasion featured the presentation of paper, entitled, “The Role of Instructional Materials on Academic Performance of Students in Schools” by Dr Nasiru Mohammed of the Department of Instructional Technology, School of Education, Federal College of Education (Tech), Gombe.
