Presidential contest: Gana turns down SDP’s agreement, may head to Supreme Court

Social Democratic Party chieftain, Prof Jerry Gana has refused to sign agreement not appeal to the Supreme Court against the judgement of the Appeal Court which declared Mr Donald Duke as the presidential flag bearer of the party.

The court of appeal has on Thursday declared Duke as the presidential candidate of the SDP against the Federal High Court’s judgement which verdict favoured Prof Jerry Gana as the candidate of the party.

The Appeal Court judgement had said the decision to appeal is the right of the parties, in this matter, Prof Jerry Gana and Donald Duke in this case.

SDP’s National Publicity Secretary Alfa Mohammed said “although there was an attempt by the party to commit the two claimants to the presidential ticket to an agreement against appealing the outcome of the the judgment of the court of appeal, Prof Jerry Gana did not sign the said agreement.

According to him, Gana found it suspicious that the party which did not find it necessary to initiate similar agreement when the matter was at the lower court should be asking for commitment at the court of appeal stage.

Hence he will meet with his counsels and the campaign council to review the situation and issue a statement in the next few days.

Meanwhile, the National chairman is expected to summon a national working committee meeting within the next 24 hours to review the situation.
