As the World marks Health Day, the Society for Family Health Nigeria (SFH) has stressed the need for every individual to take responsibility in preventing the vector-borne diseases.
Its Managing Director, Bright Ekweremadu, in a statement, regretted that diseases that killed many Nigerians, especially children, were preventable, adding that this year’s World Health Day theme “Small Bite, Big Threat” drew attention to ways of protecting families from vector-borne diseases.
According to the statement, the theme highlights the serious negative effects a small mosquito bite can have on a family, community and an economy, hence the need for preventive measures to be taken seriously.
The statement said: “Everyone has a major role to play, fathers, mothers, our youth, communities, media and the government, amongst others. These diseases are preventable and still, unfortunately, they plague us and lead to unnecessary deaths.
“By keeping a clean environment free of vector breeding points, sleeping inside an LLIN, wearing protective garments and getting vaccinated, we can have a disease-free future.”
SFH recently concluded Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) distribution campaign in Ogun state, expressing satisfaction that many families in rural areas “now know the importance of, and how to correctly use them.”
