Prioritise adult education to eradicate illiteracy’

Member representing Eti-Osa Federal Constituency of Lagos state in the House of Representatives, Hazeez Akinloye, has called on the federal government to give priority attention to adult education with a view to eradicating illiteracy in the country.
Akinloye noted that adult education should be seen as key to having a credible election, adding that the Back to School Adult Literacy Initiative organised by SPELL Africa, a Non -Governmental Organisation (NGO) where he spoke as special guest speaker, was a unique occassion.
According to him, “when adults are educated, there will be no room for mediocre and this would lead to the development of the country.
“ I commend the organisers of this programme for a job well done.
It is rear to see people who are dedicated and committed to other people’s well -being without expecting any returns.
“I think the government should emulate this.
We have been concerned about educating the younger generation, which is also very good, but having a balanced educated society cannot be ignored.
“Illiteracy is a challenge in fostering the growth of this nation.
For instance, the issue of voting, an educated person would understand without any prejudice that his vote counts and nobody could buy him off but an uneducated person can be easily cajoled and manipulated.
Founder of the project, Erezi Edoreh stated that the initiative was borne out of efforts to improve the standard of education and eradicate illiteracy in Africa.
“This project is meant to transform the lives of 65 million youths and adult who cannot read and write.
Once or twice a month we invite celebrity and public figures to teach our students how to read and write.
This is to inspire them not to give up in the journey to becoming literate.
“This project is being sustained by volunteer teachers; these are people who are doing very well in their chosen careers, so they spare their evening time to teach our students at no cost.
