Prison officers, hoodlums’ fracas claims 2 in Sokoto

Sokoto state Police Command yesterday confirmed the death of two suspected bandits following a fracas between Prison offi cers and hoodlums who attacked prison van and attempted to free a suspect. Speaking to newsmen, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Cordelia Nwewe, also said one person was hospitalised as result of injuries he sustained during the fracas. “A group of miscreants attacked prison van while it was conveying awaiting trial inmates to court; two lives were lost and one person sustained injuries,” she said. She said the hoodlums succeeded in stopping the vehicle on Sultan Abubakar Road in their attempt to set the inmates free, adding that “some weapons were recovered from the suspects.” Nwewe added that a Deputy Commissioner of Police was detailed by the Commissioner of Police to investigate the matter and the Command would provide details on the incident. Meanwhile, the Public Relations Offi cer of the Nigeria Prisons Service in Sokoto, Mr. Umar Faruk, has said the inmates had been successfully taken back safely to prison custody. “The 18 awaiting trail inmates were successfully escorted back to safe custody in the prison and security beefed up in and around the facility,” he said.
