Privitisation: 9 years after, FG launches website on power recovery programmme

The federal government on Tuesday launched a website on the Power Sector Recovery Programme (PSRP) to inform Nigerians about the implementation of PSRP and other achievements of the power reform.

Recall that the country’s power sector was privatised in 2013; the development which berthed Discos, power generation companies (Gencos), and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Engr. Sanusi Garba, who launched the website– www.psrp.org.ng, at a one-day workshop for media practitioners in Abuja, said the Federal Government was committed to ensuring an efficient electric power supply industry.

The workshop was organised by the NERC   in collaboration with the Power Sector Recovery Operation (PSRO) Secretariat.

Garba said: “The federal government initiated the PSRP with the support of the World Bank to achieve the goal of Nigerians having access to adequate, reliable and affordable electricity in Nigeria.”

According to him, one of the policy interventions of the FG was the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP).

He said: “ About one million meters were installed at Phase zero of the NMMP. Phase one of the NMMP, which envisages the installation of four million meters, will start as soon as the procurement process is concluded. In addition, Distribution Companies have submitted Performance Improvement Plans to NERC which commits them to certain minimum service delivery levels and progressive improvement in service quality and standards”.

In his presentation, Engr. Belije Madu from the PSRP secretariat, said the tariff shortfall of N247bn of 2021 would be ‘eliminated’ by December this year.
