Project us objectively, Abia CP tells journalists

The Commissioner of Police, Abia state command, CP Mustapha Mohammed Bala, has solicited for the cooperation of journalists in the state to mirror the command objectively in their day- to-day coverage of assignments.

He made this plea when the leadership of Correspondents Chapel of Abia NUJ ably led by Comrade Sam Obinna Ibe of Blueprint newspapers paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Umuahia.

Bala thanked Correspondents Chapel for the cooperation he has received since assumption of office as a Commissioner of Police a month ago.

He noted the powerful influence of the media in disseminating information geared towards national , adding that journalists should mirror the command objectively with a view to spotlighting the activities of the command while combating crimes and criminality in the state.

“We cannot do the job alone. Together we will achieve peace and make Abia safe for all. We have a lot in common. Now is Christmas period and we are going into elections and the media are critical stakeholders during elections to ensure peace in the society through unbiased reportage and effective information management.”

To this end, he called on journalists in Abia state to ensure that they get police angle on any issue concerning the command before rushing to the press.

He added that any wrong information to the public can have far- reaching consequences.

He decried the menace of social media in the area of fake news, hate speech and blackmail noting that Correspondents Chapel by their training are better information managers.

He said: “When you get the report, don’t fail to confirm from us. There are certain information that is not meant for public consumption, you have to manage it professionally.”

He promised to make himself available with assurance that no stone would be left unturned in partnering with the media to make Abia a safe haven.
