Kano state commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Binta Tijjani Jubril, has described prolonged labour as one of the factors responsible for alarming cases of Vesico Vaginal Fistula among women.

Speaking when she paid an official visit to Kwalli Hostel, accommodating VVF patients, Jubril said the state government was very much concerned about the disease, which was taking a severe toll on women, adding that treating the disease was free of charge by the Kwankwaso administration.

According to her, many women with VVF cases would have been saved from the agony of the ailment if they had quickly rushed to the hospital during labour, lamenting that many pregnant women had failed to comprehend the benefit of prenatal and antenatal care.

She, however, stated that the state government had been consistent on rendering good medical care to women with VVF cases and advised those suffering from the disease to go to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital for attention.

Conducting the commissioner round the Kwalli Hostel, the officer in charge of the hostel, Hajiya Laure, told the commissioner that since the inception of the programme, about 35 women with VVF cases were, successfully, operated.

She commended the federal ministry of health and the Fistula Foundation for coming to the aid of VVF patients and appealed for continued assistance in checking the menace.
