Promotion: NUJ urges Benue to probe extortion of civil servants

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Benue state council Wednesday frowned at alleged extortion of money from civil servants by some government officials vested with the responsibility of handling staff promotions in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The union in a communiqué issued Wednesday after the monthly congress meeting noted with dismay that the act was against the civil service rules.

The union called on the state government to investigate the alleged extortion of money by the officials so as to bring such officials in charge of promotion to book.

It commended the Benue state government in its efforts in improving the welfare of civil servants.

The communique, which was signed by the drafting committee, Veronica Mzamber (chairman) and Maxwell Lambo (secretary)

also  called on the state government to connect the rural communities with bridges destroyed by herders and devise ways of dislodging them to enable the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) return to their ancestral homes.

“The congress condemned the recent invasion of churches, especially St. Peters Catholic Church Low Level and St. Augustine Catholic Church Demekpe, carting away money, Holy Communion and other valuables and called on security agencies to investigate with the aim to bring perpetrators to justice.

“It also condemned the continued conflict between the Ihyarev and Kparev along Gboko road which falls within 16 km radius and called upon the Benue state government to resolve the crises to give peace a chance.

“This is because the crises are bringing untold hardship to the people within the area,” the communiqué reads in part.
